Yes, one of the worst-kept secrets in music is now out, U2 will return to Dublin city’s Croke Park stadium for their Joshua Tree 30th anniversary tour this summer. To celebrate the 30 years since the seminal album was released and toured and the thirty years since June 1987 when they packed out the GAA stadium on Jones Road, U2 will play all the songs from their Joshua Tree album live.
July 22, 2017, is to be the Irish date of a tour that will include cities across North America and Europe. The former Oasis guitar player and songwriter, Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds will be supporting the Irish band throughout their European tour. This is the first time that U2 have played this kind of retrospective tour and Croke Park will be a special place to be in 2017, especially coming thirty years after one of the most iconic gigs ever held at Croke Park and there have been a few!
The Joshua Tree album catapulted U2 in the popular stratosphere that they’ve enjoyed ever since; the 1987 album not only sold 25 million copies but gave the Dublin band its only number one singles in America – ‘With or Without You’ and ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, as well as the immediately recognisable ‘Where the Streets Have No Name’. Critics have often called the Joshua Tree U2’s best album and the Croke Park concerts will feature the album in its entirety so fans will be able to hear favourite tracks like Red Hill Mining Town and One Tree Hill.
